Barents Stories (2017-2018)

NORWAY/SWEDEN/FINLAND: What makes these particular areas unique? What stories continue to live on in the regions, and what new stories have emerged? What is the value of friendship with another country, city, or place—and how sustainable is that value over time?

This is an ongoing work from Brynhild Bye-Tiller. The aim is to study different environments, which stories define the truth about a place and to develop methods of participation.

Barents Stories (2018–2025) started as a Nordic collaborative project involving the artists Maria Nordbäck (FI), Nina Svensson (SE), and Brynhild Bye-Tiller (NO). Together they traveled in the Barents region in Sweden and Finland during the period 2017-2018, close to national borders. They examined diverse narratives, situations and people. Challenging and nuancing existing stories, landmarks and their communities. Mapping, collecting and exchanging knowledge and experiences with local residents. All three artists have extensive experience working with dialogical aesthetics, inviting those whom the place and the subject matter concern to actively participate.
